Ankle pain is as common as the line at the DMV. There are a few lucky people who are spared, but most of us know the pain an ankle injury can and will cause.
The most common source of pain in your ankle is a strained ankle. It frequently happens while playing sports, but it can also happen when you fall on your way to the store. The RICE method is frequently recommended for immediate treatment:
– Rest: rest as much as you can, and, if possible, try not to walk at all
– Ice: use a bag of ice to reduce swelling and numb the pain
– Compression: use elastic bandages for wrapping your ankle, but don’t wrap it too tightly
– Elevation: keep your ankle raised above heart level
Approximately 15% of ankle pain can be caused by other culprits like:
– Nerve damage or injury
– Blocked blood vessels
If you suspect your ankle pain is caused by one of these factors make an appointment with your doctor right away. RICE might be able to reduce the pain in the short term, but cannot heal the ankle. In rare cases managing the symptoms in the long run becomes key and requires a professional treatment plan.
